This type is suitable on hilly strata and has been evolved and refined with experience gained in its operation. As the trench weir structure is below the bed level of the stream the waterway of the stream is practically left undisturbed. The intake structure is located at one end of the trench weir sufficiently away from the midstream so that the regime of the river is not affected during normal flow condition. Two openings are provided in the intake structure. One for carrying the discharge to the power house through the water conductor and the other at lower level to carry the silt collected in the trench weir. Flexible protection is provided both upstream as well as downstream of the trench.

The desilting tank is designed to exclude particle size exceeding 0.25mm. Removal of silt is effected through reduction in flow velocity. A flow through velocity of 0.22m/sec and settling of 2.75cm/sec are generally adopted to determine the size of the desilting tank.
